What is an Archery Recurve Bow?

In the sport of archery, there are many different categories and types of equipment. One with which many outside the sport are not necessarily familiar is the archery recurve bow. The archery recurve bow is unique for a few different reasons, which is partly what makes it somewhat unknown to those outside the sport.

An archery recurve bow gets its name from the fact that the tips of the bow curve away from the shooter when the bow is being held. A major difference between a recurve bow and other bows is the stringing. With most other bows, the string will touch only the tips of the bow itself. On the other hand, a recurve bow’s string will actually touch the limbs.

So what is the advantage of the curve in a recurve bow? For one, the bent limbs allows for lower bracing heights within the same limb length. Secondly, on the first few inches of draw, you actually get more spring force in a recurve bow. Finally, most archers will tell you that the cruve gives you a smoother draw when you go to shoot.

If you watch carefully, you can actually see archery recurve bows in action more than you may realize. For instance, they are the only type of bow allowed in the Olympic games. It is also the one most often found in European and Asian competitions as well as many in the United States.

If you are not intimately involved in the sport of archery, it is difficult to understand how many different pieces of equipment and types of equipment there are out there. The archery recuve bow is one of the most common in competition. Just remember, if you see a bow with tips pointed away from the archer, you are probably looking at an archery recurve bow.
