The History of Traditional Archery

Using bows and arrows to hunt for food is considered traditional archery. Eventually, it began being used as a weapon in battle as well. The reason that it has stayed around even after rifles became the easier hunting tool is because it was believed to be more versatile to use. Archery also takes special skill and training in order to be done properly and effectively, which make it a recreational hobby that many still participate in to this day.

Traditional archery for hunting takes skill and special attention that create an intimate experience that the hunters are attracted to. They hunt in close range to ensure that the kill is humane and that the animal dies quickly and without suffering. Longbows are the ones most often used when the hunter wants to stick to traditional archery methods. Practice and training are necessary before most archers will typically try to hunt so that they are able to execute accurate kill shots rather than aimlessly wounding an animal.

In warfare, specifically during the Hundred Years' War, the English used longbows against the French. Traditional archery was very effective in battle because bows are reliable and simple, whereas guns can break and also take time to reload. However, as guns became better made they replaced bows during warfare simply because they could get through armor and take minimal training to use.

Efforts to phase out the use of bows in hunting put a small halt in its popularity, however, in recent years some countries have considered bringing it back. Traditional archery has evolved into modern competitive archery and other competition over time in order to keep the sport alive. Archery can still be practiced for recreation with the use of targets, but in most areas it has been made illegal to use for hunting because some believe it to be inhumane.
